Hi everyone,
I hope that everybody had a great weekend! We enjoyed some college football and worked in the yard. It's obvious that fall is coming. As much as I love summer, its always nice for a change! Talking about fall and being prepared, please remember to send in a light jacket with your student. Our classrooms are often pretty cold and the weather has been unpredictable so it's always handy to have a sweater or jacket (please make sure to label it with your child's first and last name). Along with fall, we will also have a higher possibilities for colds and germs to be spread. Please make sure that your child is getting a well-balanced diet and enough sleep to keep them healthy during this time! Fall Break will be next week from September 24th-28th. School will not be in session and all after school programs will not be running. Any time you have a moment during the break, practice letters, numbers, and shapes with your child. We are also working towards counting to 100 by 1's which can take a few months so any opportunity they have to try is GREAT! These are the topics being covered this week: Phonics: Letters Jj, Kk, and L. Cycle 2 testing will be conducted Friday Reading: Identifying main details in a text Math: Comparing 2D/3D shapes Writing: Planning and organizing your writing Science: Motion I will be sending homework packets on Monday that will be due Friday. I will also send an OPTIONAL Fall Break homework packet on Friday for your child to work on!

We have had a busy week at Powers Ferry and inside our classroom! 1st, 3rd, and 5th grade were taking the COGAT standardized test so we practiced respect by remaining quiet in the hallways and bathrooms. We have also begun our Kindergarten fundraiser. I was lucky enough to get to be on the morning announcements to explain our awesome Roll and Win Smartboard game. Students are able to roll virtual dice twice for $1. If their dice add to the "Magic Number of the Day" they receive a HUGE pixie stick! It's a blast and even if you roll a different number you still walk away with a small treat. This fundraiser will be continuing through September and supports our grades ability to go on the most field trips possible!
I sent home your child's GKIDS Readiness Scores for progress reports on Thursday. These reports were formed through many assessments required from the state. Some of these assessments included how to handle a book, letter identification, shape recognition, and counting to 20. It also took in consideration your child's observed interaction with their peers and teachers. Please review these scores, as they will let you know your child's "readiness" for kindergarten. It will list some strategies or tips for you and your child to do at home to strengthen or continue these skills. Here are the subjects being covered this week: Reading- identifying the main idea Phonics- Letters Gg, Hh, Ii Writing- How to begin writing Math- 2-Dimensional shapes Science- How to sort items Handwriting homework will go home Tuesday covering the above letters in phonics and will be due the following Monday!
